Twice Knit

because once is never enough

what do I do now? July 7, 2009

Filed under: baby — twiceknit @ 5:18 pm

I’ve managed to avoid virtually all pregnancy-induced ailments. For instance: morning sickness? Never had it. As I count down the last month, though, something weird has happened to my hands. Specifically, it hurts to bend my fingers.

This makes knitting rather difficult.

Thus, I’ve stopped doing it.

This is rather annoying. I keep looking longingly at my knitting bag, which I guess I should just put up for the next month. I am assured that this should go away once the baby is born. I really hope so.

So now I’m searching for other things to do. To add insult to injury, our oven also died last weekend, so I can’t even bake. I think the universe is conspiring to make me even more eager for the baby to arrive. As if the massive lumberingness that characterizes the ninth month isn’t enough already.

yet another hat July 3, 2009

Another hat…and another use for the mountain of Karabella Aurora 8. The Elf Hat!

The pattern called for a thicker yarn, so I just kind of winged the CO and measurements, and it turned out well. No idea what size range I ended up with, though. Won’t be too long before I’ll have an actual baby head to test it on.

This is such an adorable pattern and a very quick knit. It was such a hit that W asked me to make him an adult version with the colors reversed. An opportunity to put more of the yarn put to use! Yay!

more stash busting June 27, 2009

As I’ve mentioned before, I own a whole bunch of Karabella Aurora 8. It has become fully seamed sweaters for me that turned out to be terribly unflattering. The yarn and I have issues. So it has subsequently been relegated to several rather large bags of deknitted yarn. Always on the search for a way to use it that does not involve producing ill-fitting garments for myself, I seem to have hit the motherlode with baby things.  It even turns out to work quite well for toys. Who knew?

Unfortunately, these all turn out to be rather small things, so I still have lots left. Especially in green. But I made a dent with the cabled baby vest, which, though lacking buttons and in need of a good wash, is done!

This was a fun, and quick, pattern. Bonus: no seaming. I liked it so much that I designed a hat to accompany it. Available through the link below or through the “free patterns” link at the top of the page.

Hmm, now, what else can I make with this yarn?

hats galore June 16, 2009

It took me weeks to sew on the buttons, but the french baby sweater now has a matching hat.

  • pattern: a Catherine Bouquerel knitting kit from France
  • yarn: Pingouin Pingodouce
  • needles: US 2

There were plans for matching booties, but not sure if that will still happen. If I do make them, I’m pretty sure that will involve a pattern other than the one that came with the kit. I think I’ve had enough with the french translation.

And I finally made something that would be appropriate for a boy! Another baby hat and socks.

Apparently on a roll with boy things, I’ve also started a cabled baby vest:

It’s a fun pattern and – bonus – uses up yet more stash yarn!

I don’t think this is what nesting means June 5, 2009

Filed under: baby, random — twiceknit @ 3:12 pm

We’re under two months until the baby’s due, and this is apparently when the whole “nesting” thing should kick in. But it’s more because of the dwindling time than any real desire to accumulate these things that we’ve finally started getting around to acquiring the baby stuff for pretty much strictly the necessities. The one thing we really cared about was the stroller (we’ve long known we wanted a Quinny Buzz, should we ever have a baby). Check. Everything else just seems like stuff.

Since about March, though, we seem to have been undergoing a systematic strategy of replacing most of our electronics. It’s absolutely not baby-related, but we’ll just make this count. It started with the innocent replacement of our ancient desktop computer. That expanded into building ourselves a whole little network. Then our waffle maker decided to die. (It’s worth mentioning here that waffles are a key outlet for using my sourdough starter when I feed it, oh, every week.) However, in replacing the waffle maker, that also expanded to replacing our (horrid) blender with one that actually works, along with several other kitchen implements. The only thing that has escaped thus far is the hand mixer, but I have my sights set on that one, too.

Conveniently, most everything you could want is on sale somewhere due to the whole economic catastrophe, making this whole effort much more affordable. However, it seems more of it should revolve around baby stuff. There’s still time, I guess. In the meantime, I’ll just continue my quest to use up sock yarn on random things for baby appendages that may or may not turn out to be colors for the correct gender.

finished! May 31, 2009

Filed under: knitting — twiceknit @ 11:23 am

Not just one, but TWO totally finished (buttons and all!) baby cardigans to show off. The most exciting part: one of them is the french baby cardigan! My knitting penance is done! Well, nearly. A matching hat should be finished today, and there may also be matching booties in the works. I haven’t decided. Thanks so much to my Mom for sewing on the buttons AND the velcro that does the real work inside the sweater.

  • pattern: a Catherine Bouquerel knitting kit from France
  • yarn: Pingouin Pingodouce
  • needles: US 2

And now with buttons: the mossy jacket.

Hmm, now what to make? I contemplated starting adult socks, but now they seem so…big.

fun with geometry May 17, 2009

Filed under: baby gifts, finished, knitting — twiceknit @ 11:30 am

In need of something extra to include with a baby gift, I stumbled across a pattern for a dodecahedron! What baby doesn’t need a pointy (yet soft) ball to throw around?

  • pattern: Celestine
  • yarn: Lane Cervinia Calzetteria (from stash!)
  • needles: US 2

I love this! A very quick knit and great way to use up leftover sock yarn. I chose to make it smaller than the pattern called for and followed another ravelry user’s mods to cast on 7 sts for each panel, rather than 11, then followed the rest of the pattern as written.

I think I might another one for myself!

a sense of humor where you least expect it May 13, 2009

Filed under: random, travel — twiceknit @ 3:59 pm

While in NY a couple weeks ago, we spent an afternoon wandering around Bear Mountain State Park. The incessant rain actually let up for a few hours and it ended up being a beautiful day. In the park, there is a short nature trail that’s part zoo, part nature walk. Along the way, there are signs explaining the trees and other natural features you pass. Occasionally, they throw in a fun fact or two. For instance, did you know:

I did not. Wonder if this works if the cricket is indoors?

Interspersed among the tree markers was also, hands down, the best feature marker I’ve ever seen.

Can’t read it? Here’s a closer view:

That cracks me up. These people clearly have a sense of humor.

Also in the truth in advertising department, we glimpsed this incredibly honest Easter treat in a grocery store:

So remember: when sugar and chocolate aren’t enough, there’s always butter krak.

more girl knitting May 11, 2009

Filed under: baby gifts, finished — twiceknit @ 3:59 pm

It seems that all of the stash yarn I have is more appropriate for baby girl knitting. Today’s project is yet another example. If we don’t have a girl, hopefully someone else will.

  • pattern: Mossy Jacket
  • yarn: generic cotton yarn from charity shop in UK
  • needles: US size 8

This was an incredibly quick knit, done almost completely in the car on a quick trip up and back to NY. It’s still awaiting buttons, but I’m quite pleased with it.

AND all the pieces of the french baby sweater are finally done! Now I just need to sew it up. Actually, they’ve been done for a couple weeks. The pink cardigan, which required no seaming, was my attempt to avoid that finishing. Hopefully there will be a finished picture of the french baby sweater soon…

no sheep for me May 1, 2009

Filed under: baby, finished, knitting — twiceknit @ 7:11 am

We’ll be out of town this weekend, so I’ll miss Maryland Sheep & Wool. Probably not such a terrible thing, as I haven’t actually used any yarn I got last year. Come to think of it, I haven’t actually bought any new yarn in months, yet I don’t seem to be making much of a dent in the stash. Maybe that has something to do with me making projects so small that I can get several out of one skein of sock yarn.

Speaking of small projects, I have actually made something besides baby socks. Behold: rattles.

  • pattern: Toadstool Baby Rattle
  • yarn: Lion Brand Microspun (striped rattle), Rowan 4 Ply Soft (purple rattle)
  • needles: US size 3 (striped), US size 1 (purple)

A very fast knit perfectly suited to leftover sock yarn. And you get to put a cat toy in it! What more could you want?
